Reid from the Taupo last night, it appears that the night was dark and gusty, with a nasty cross sea running, and as the steamer was pitching a great deal it is supposed that a sudden lurch caused Mr. Reid to lose his balance and tumble over-board. Both evening papers, in obituary notices of the deceased, express the deepest regret. * AUCKLAND. March 6. Bishops Moraii and Redwood are visiting the Catholic schools. A girl named M'Meara was severely burned to-day through another child throwing lighted matches on her, which ignited her clothes. It is feared her injuries are fatal. ' «. CHRISTCHURCH. March 6.
The boarding-house destroyed by fire this morning was owned by Mr. Buchanan, of Wellington, and was insured for L4OO in the Victorian ofliee. Mr. Bird, who occupied the the building, was uninsured, and estimates his loss at L3OO. Two boarders lost property to the value of LIOO. The fire is supposed to have re- | su'ted from defective building near the c.iimney. , March 7. The entries for the Canterbury Ram : and Ewe Fair are —Rams, 2355 ; ewes. 230. _ . Yesterday, at the Wesleyan anniversary service, Mr. D. G. Smith, repreaenj tative from the British Conference, received an address of welcome. The receipts at yesterday's and Sunday's services exceeded L9OO.
Further inquiries show the insurance in connection with the late fire to be— Union, L6OO on buildings; Victoria, L4OO on furniture. •
INVERCARGILL. March 6. Messrs. Macandrew, Fraser, and Wilson left for Dunedin soon after their arrival from Riverton. Sir George Grey arrived by special train this afternoon. There were very few people present, and no demonstration. Sir George purposes staying until Friday morning. He will l'eceive a deputation to-morrow. TIMARU. March 6. The District Court has been occupied for two days with the trial for perjury of Flora M'Kinnon. Late this afternoon, the jury acquitted accused. Mr. Hammersley, who defended, in addressing the jury, made a most telling speech, especially commenting on Loudon's and Agnew's evidence. His address lasted an hour, and was listened to by a large number of people in Court. This result will determine the affiliation case, Flora M'Kinnon v. John Loudon, previously heard before the Resident Magistrate, who deferred judgment till the perjury case should be concluded. Loudon will also pay L3OO damages, awarded to Flora M'Kinnon by the Supreme Court.
In the Resident Magistrate's Court today, the adjourned case brought by the police against Margaret Wilson for child murder, was concluded. At the previous Coroner's inquiry, a verdict of accidental death was returned, but the prisoner is now committed to stand her trial at the Supreme Court on a charge of wilful murder.
Mr. Richard Turnbull (says to-night's Fouth Canterbury Times) consents, in reply to a largely signed requisition, to stand for the vacant seat for Timaru. Mr. Wakelicld has declined.
GISBORNE. March 7. A criminal, prosecution was instituted against Lawrence and others engaged in tiie late destruction of property. The ca.se has occupied the last two days. The R.M. stated that forcible entry had been clearly proved, and that the tenant swore he permitted the entry. The case was dismissed, the Magistrate recommending proceedings to be taken against both sides.
