This morning's Tiiaorn JL'rahl says
' " Harve.-t work is now being rapidly carried " o:i all over tlie County of 'Wainiate. The heavy fail of rain on Sunday night, viHi the exception of keeping hack work on Monday, did no injury to the crops, as it was succeeded by a cold, dry atm sphere. The crops are f.:r better than was anticipated j some time previous to harvest. The late I crops of oats particularly has wonderfully imp'-oved. Should the weather continue favorable about two week* longer they will be secured, except a few paddocks which will be late for cutting. The greater part of the wheat is cut, and a large portion in the stack. The quality of the grain is good, and better than for several years past. Some -wheat in the district wiil weigh 6'Glbs. to the bushel." The telephone is spreading all over Europe. In German}" it is now a part of the post oliice system. It is in mo-e general use in that country than in the United States, b--cau.se nothing is paid to the patentee, whereas here every telephone pays an annual charge of SOdols. If the tax were I
not so high it would be more generally employed. The English Post Office Department has adopted the bell telephone as a part of its telegraph system. In a recent telephonic experiment in connection with the cable, 21J miles long, between Dover and Calais, there was not the slightest failure during a period of two hours. Though three other wires were busy at the same time, every word was heard through the telephone, and individual voices were distinguished.— Kxch.inge.
