SPORTING NOTES.

<► By Ti ir WiriFi'i.EK. Only one of the hm-sus from Dunedin has yet reached Oamarn, Mr. Swanson's Sir William having arrived by tlio Waitalci Yesterday. Poor old Sir William, however, broke down so completely in the Selling Race at Dnnodin that 1 fear he will not ho able to make his appearance on the Oamarn course. At present, three on!\ of the horses engaged in our races are at work on the course—Line Peter, Nelly, and Modesty. The former appears to bo in very good condition, and is being put through some hard work. Yesterday morning, lie was sent for about fiiroe miles pretty fast, and had a repel ition of tho tlose this morning. Nelly is looking very well, and is going through some steady work. it will be remembered that at Ihe last Agricultural and Pastoral Show, Sir. Sherwin showed a. tine, well- made, .and pr.i- j mislng filly, which secured the admiration of all who saw iter. Site shortly afterwards passed out of Mr. Slu-rwin/s hands, and her present owner has determined to try what she is made of at the forthcoming nueting. Modesty lias only la.'ely been handled, .and as a natural consequence she is rather on the big side. Sie has been doing some steady work in company with Mr. Shalders' mare, and may prove a successful performer at our.annual meeting ; hut I shall res'-rve m} - (.pinion until 1 have seen more of her. At present there is little to induce one to pay a visit to the course, but on Friday morning there will be considerably more .attraction. By that time probably most of the horses will be in Oamarn, and some interesting work will be entered upon. Several of the cracks are, I believe, expected here to-morrow, including Templeton, that champion of numerous contests, Titania, Ariel, and Longlands. Unknown wilt also, 1. am informed, be here to-morrow, while the hurdle-racer Theodore passed through Hampden today, and is now on his way for Oamarn. There is at present very little speculation on the races, but nothing like decent odds can be obtained. The betting on the North Otago Turf Club Handicap may be stated at from 3 to 5 to 1 on the field.
