Matson and Co. celebrated the opening of the corn exchange and weekly grain market on Saturday by a free banquet. A hundred persons were present. The affair was a great success. At the produce sale of Matson and Co., a large quantity of grain was sold. Wheat fetched 4s 7:»d to 4s Sd ; oats, 3s 3d to 3s !}£d ; barley, 4s 4d to 5s Id ; rye grass, Gs 7d. March 5. A Masonic Lodge, under the Irish Constitution, will be opened on Tuesday next. The Waste Lands sales during the month of February realised L74.GGS.
AUCKLAND. March 4. At a test of the city "waterworks the pumping machinery raised a thousand gallons 230 feet with 2iibs. of steam. The half-yearly report of the Oddfellows shows 14 district lodges of the Manchester Unity, and 1,108 members. The total amount of the investments is L 2.350. INTSW PLYMOUTH. '■■; March 4. Mr. Jones, -who has just returned from Mokau. states that Rewi has visited that place. In coining down the river he remained a few days, and visited the Europeans'daily. Ke expressed pleasure at seeing the Europeans settled there, and said he would advise Government to do whatever the land owners and settlers required to open up trade. Rewi lias returned to Waikato. He is expected to arrange, for Tawahio to come to Waitara to meet Sir George Grey. This is the first instance of Rewi having visited Europeans on the West Coast since the commencement of the Waikato war. ® TBIAKU. March 5. Mr. Wakefield will contest the seat for Tirnaru against Mr. Turnbull. A sharp contest is expected.
