i (PICK FKF.SS AiIEKOY.) <& WELLINGTON. i-'ebruary 27. In the Supreme Court to-day, judgment was given in the ca.se of Henderson v. the Oueen. The case arose out of a contract" at Wesiport, The contractor tendered according to specifications, but found that as part of the section was through a swamp, there was great subsiwhich, necessitated a very much, greater quantity of earth filling than had been allowed for (about Lo.OOO worth), hence the claim. Judgment was given for the Crown, with costs as agreed. _ «. —. DUNEDIN. February 27.
The Ocean Beach Railway Company hsivu made arrangements for the conveyance of ir>,ooo people to the races. During the present year no fewer than :525 children have been refused admission to schools in Dnnedin. This does not include the number refused at the Normal School, where the masters ceased to record the names of the applicants. e BLUFF. February 27. Arrived.—Tararua, on the 20th, at 5 p.m. She brings oG saloon and 48 steerage for all ports. e, AUCKLAND. February 27. A petition is being signed for the release '. of H. S. Meyers from gaol. Bishop Moran visited the educational establishments of Auckland yesterday. A gardener named John Nairn was found with the left side of his throat cut, and a deep wound in his arm, and lying in a pool of blood. Nairn says a strange man called on Sunday and demanded money, which he refused. The stranger seized a razor, inflicted wounds, and stole 6s. The wounds are not dangerous. Nairn was dismissed from his employment lately for intemperance. His story is not believed, as he was seen out on Monday. A deputation of butchers to-day requested the Colonial Secretary to renew the lease of the Newmarket slaughterhouse, alleging that the new city abattoirs
do not afford sufficient accommodation. Colonel Whitmore promised to have the new abattoirs measured, and if there is not sufficient accommodation, the Government would keep open the Newmarket slaughter-house until the Council extend the new abattoirs.
The City Council to-day referred the charges of incompetency against Mr. Anderson, the city engineer, to two engineers. Cleared—Loch Fleet, for London, with 303 sacks wheat, 2201 cases gum, 651 bales wool, 110 tons manganese, besides other produce.
GISBORNE. February 27. The police are now in pursuit of the men employed by Lawrence, the late Captain Head's manager, and who caused the disturbance and destruction of property yesterday.
