It is \mderstood that the Government,, having decided that the Telegraph officials should receive the increases to '■Jjhejti?. ■salaries which were withheld for a period, have also decided that all shall receive in a lump sum the increases due on their salaries since the beginning of the financial year. It is reported that Captain Carey, of the Taupo, has been.appointed to the Rotorua; that Captain Malcolm, of the Wanaka, is to take command of the Taupo ; and that the captain who has now charge of the Rotorua is to be transferred to the Taranaki.

The first case under "The Destitute Persons Act, 1877," was heard to-day, when a widow sought to compel her deceased husband's father to contribute to the maintenance of her children. Mr. Lowther Broad, Resident Magistrate, ruled that children living with a parent not incapacitated from working for them, were not destitute under the new Act, and that such parent could not compel any other relative to contribute to their support. He also expressed strong doubt whether, upon a proper construction of the Act, looked at as a whole, infant children could, under any circumstances, be held to be destitute persons.
