The lion. Mr. I-arnach and Mr. <.'arrnthers, the arrived in Oamurtt at half-past 12 o'clock this morning. The Mayor and Messrs. Sumpter and Connell (a portion of a deputation appointed to interview Mr. in reference to the truck and other questions) awaited that gentleman's arrival, in order to make arrangements for an interview this morning.
We are informed that the whole of the immigrants forwarded per Waitaki on Tuesday have found employment, with the exception of seventeen domestic servants.
At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Kdward Rose, charged with attempting to commit suicide, was remanded for a week. Gavin Patterson and John C. Black were each tined 3s. for allowing their iiorses to wander.
The special meeting of the Committee of the North Otago Coursing Club was held this morning. Present—Messrs. X. Fleming (in the chair), Allen. Lintott, Hay, and Konnyne (lion. see). The date of the Waterloo meeting was altered from the Kith tc the ilth of July. Mr. 1!. M'Auley was elected a member of Committee in the stead of the late Mr. Whcatley. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr. I.loyd with regard to the remuneration that lie would require to act as judge during the forthcoming seasou. Messrs. Hay, Lintott, and the Secretary were appointed a committee to settle all matters in connection with the programmes, printing, etc. A vote of thanks to the t'hairman concluded the proceedings. It will be seen by an announcement in another column that the Waiareka School will re-open on Monday next. Mr Fidler will act as master for one mouth, in order to afford the Committee time to appoint a successor. It is to be hoped that all the scholars will attend on the occasion of the re-opening in order that the operations of the school mav recommence with ef'ut.
The Oamatu Philharmonic Society met for
I practice last night. The attendance was large, and the parts were more evenly balanced than was the case at previous practices. The following were the pieces rehearsed : From "The Messiah "—''For unto us a Child is horn," "All we like sheep," "Let all the angels," "Lift up your heads;" and from "The Creation" — •'Achieved is the glorious work," "The Heavens are telling," and "The marv'ious work." Dining an interval the election of a Treasurer and Committes was proceeded with, with thi following result : Hon. Treas.urer. Mr. F. Coiliett: Committee— Messrs. .). K. Anderson, Ho'dsworth, D. Booth, W. J. Steward, T, Forrester, Branton, Herbert Honour, Sun pter, and Frew.
• In our report of the late meeting of the Artillery Volunteers, Dr. Garland's name' was inadvertently inserted instead of that Dr. DeLautour. The Oamaru School Committee will meet to-morrow at 4 p.m. at the office of the secretary. The weights for the various handicaps for the next race meeting of the North Otago Turf Club will he declared at a meeting to be held at the Empire Hotel to-morrow evening. Meir Aulad AIL a professor of Hindustani in Trinity College, Dublin, recently was sworn as a witness on the New Testament, observing that he would take an oath on either of the Testaments, or on the Koran, believing all three to be inspired.
