RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

THIS D.AY. (Before T. W. Esq., R.M.) STEALING A WATCH. James Keys was charged on suspicion with having, on the 9th inst., stolen a silver watch of the value of LO, the property of one James Millan. The accused denied the charge. Sergeant Beatty deposed to having received information of the larceny, and to the accused being given into custody by the prosecutor. He had searched the Recused, but did not find the watch upon him. I

James Millan, a labourer, deposed that he lived at Elderslie. He came into town on Saturday. He had taken tocf much to drink, and went ipto ai} outhouse a$ thp reap of |he Nqrthprfl Hotel during the afternoon. The accused came in and aroused, him, saying, -'Hollo, Jimmy, you've lost your watoh." The watch was an English, lever. He laid an information against the accused for having stolen the watch. He was certain he had the watch when he went into the outhouse. He Jcnes? that no one had been in the outhouse but tfye prisoner during the tiirje he was there.' The prisoner liad been iu his company previous to his going into the pu^house.

In reply to the Bench, Sergeant j Beattie said that there were some other witnesses, but none of them would be able to' throw any further light upon the matter. His Worship then dismissed the accused. ATTEMPTING TO COMMIT SUICIDEXIi Rose was placed in the box charged with having, at Otepopo, on the sth inst., attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat. Constable Green deposed that the prisoner had on the day named been found near the Otepopo River with his throat cut. He was taken to the Railway Hotel, and received medical attendance. Prisoner had afterwards told witness that he had inflicted the wound himself, and said that lie was sorry he had not dono the job' effectually, but that the knife waß not sharp enough. Dr. Smith had regularly attended the man, and had advised his; removal to the Hospital. His Worship remanded the prisoner.
