SPORTING.

(by telegraph, per press agency. ) WELLINGTON RACES. Wellington, February 8. HUTT PARK STAKES. Chokebore ... ... ... 1 Mufti 2 Stirabout ... ... ... 3 The following came to the post:— Izaak Walton, Stirabout, Standard Bearer, Mufti, and Chokebore. There was a false start, and Izaak bolted, and went right round the course before pulling up. Then they all got away in a heap, except Standard Bearer, who could not be prevailed on to move. For about half a mile all raced so close together that it was quite impossible to tell which was leading. As it was stated that the Clerk of the Course said there had been no start, his flag not having fallen, there wab some little excitement at the idea of having the race run over again. The Stewards, however, after a meeting and discussing the matter for some time, decided that the start was fair, and Chokebore the winner. Time—linin. 52secs. PROVINCIAL DISTRICT PLATE. Eakapo ... ... ... 1 Te Wlxetu ~. ... ... 2 Songster ... ... ~. S At the starting post there was a good deal of restlessness, especially in Kakapo, who pranced and curvetted a good deal. A very good start was at length effected,

all being together, except Kakapo, who had a clear lead of a length and a half, Te Whetu 2nd, and Legacy 3rd, Songster and Talleyrand close behind. About half round all the horses were lying close together behind Kakapo, who still kept his lead. Talleyrand put his best foot foremost, and made a good attempt to go to the front, but Kakapo would not allow it, although a good many thought he was too fleshy to keep up the speed required for the distance. Te Whetu soon collared Talleyrand, and took second place, Songster a good third. Time—2min. (Usees. CONSOLATION. Stanley 1 Taw era 2 Sailor ... ... ... ... 3 The entries were—Ouida, Tawera, Sailor, Izaak Walton, and Stanley. Only three came to the scratch, Stanley, Tawera, and Sailor, and the latter got the lead, Stanley being last. Coming home Stanley went to tlie front and won a good race. This closed the day's sport.
