DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Brisbane, January 22. A telegram states that the captain and crew of the missionary schooner Bertha, some of whom are experienced diggers, report that a large extent of auriferous country with gold-bearing quartz is at New Guinea. The Nelson, at Melbourne is to be cut down and armed. Melbourne, January 22. Mr. Berry has addressed 1600 electors at Geelong, and was received with enthusiasm. He reviewed the action of the Council during the past twenty yeara in connection with money Bills, and said he had forwarded a statement to the Imperial Government, setting forth the history of the present crisis. He defended the action of the Ministry, and is prepared for an appeal to the country on the question of a reformation of the Council. A vote of confidence in him was carried. The Council sends per mail an address to the Queen, setting forth the facts of the present crisis, and praying that instructions be sent to the Governor to resolve on maintaining the constitutional Government of the Colony.
