THE DISQUALIFI CATION OF FISHHOOK.
Tlie following letter lias been addressed to the Secretary of the North Otago Turf Club by the Hon. K. Campbell : Dunedin, January 17, 1878. The Secretary North Otago Turf Club, Oauiaru. Sir, —I have observed with very great regret the action taken by the Committee of your Club with respect to the removal of the disqualification on the horse "Fishhook." As one of the stewards present at the last Ojiiuaru meeting, and as one who assisted to place the disqualification on the horse, I beg to enter my protest against the action taken by your Club. J also take this opportunity of asking the Committee whether they consider the course adopted has been courteous to the stewards of the late meeting. So far as I know, none of the stewards have ever received any intimation that this matter was likely to be brought before the members of the Club. The only ground upon which it appears to me the Committee have based their reasons for removing the disqualification on. Fishhook has been as follows ■: —O'Brien applies in forma pauperis, aays he has lost a lot of money owing to the disqualifica-
tion, and asks that the horse may be allowed to run at the next Oamaru meeting.
This ha 3 been acceded to by the very club that asked all the other clubs to disqualify the horse. I decline to be a party to any such arrangement. The public have a right to ask that the money they subscribe to run for at race meetings shall be honestly run for, and they appoint stewards to protect their interests. I propose sending a copy of this letter to the Otago I aily Times and the North Otago Times.— lain, &c., Robert Campbell.
