DISASTROUS FIRE AT AUCKLAND.

A disastrous fire occurred in Newton this morning, at half-past two o'clock. The fire originated in the house of uue Depine, a shoemaker, why rescued his family with difficulty. The tire rapidly extended to the Rising Sun Hotel adjoining, and to other buildings. Several houses on the opposite side of the street were much damaged, the high wind driving the fire across. The origin oi the lire is unknown, The property destroyed consists of the Rising Sun Hotel, insured for L4OO in the South British, L 250 in the Norwich Union ; furniture and stock for L3OO in the New Zealand office. Two cottages behind (the greater portion of the furniture of which was saved), insured for LISQ in the Norwich Union ; Prince's grocery store, damage estimated at L7OO, building insured in the South British for LllsO. Streeter's pork butchery, nothing saved, insured in the Norwich Union for LIOO, in the National for LIOO ; stock uninsured, valued at L2OO. Crawford's chemist's s^iop—the damage was not great. The stock was insured for Ll5O in the South British, the furniture for LIQQ in the Norwic i Uuion ( aqd the buildings for L4O,Q in this Royal. Kimble's bakery, furniture, and slock not greatly damaged : probably LlO will cowt the loss. Mann's d>veiliug- louse was totally destwyed, and was insured in the Imperial for L2OO. Stringfellow's toyshop, "insurance unknown, South side oi street -Frond's, tailor, slightly damaged, extent about L 25 ; insured in the New Zealand office for L7O. Hayes' store and post-office, greatly insured ill the South British for L4OO, and the stock for L.200 in the Union ; estimated damage to the building, L3JX). Grcatlaw's toy and furniture shop, greatly damaged ; stock and furniture mostly destroyed ; loss fully LIOO ; house insured in tiie Standard for L2OO ; damages to t'-e building. LloO. Waddell's bakery, the damage done, LSO ; building insured for L4OO in the New SJestfand '• M'lndoe's, greengrocer, injured, insured for LlOO; in the Norwich Union. A break with aeven of the salvage corps of the Fire Brigade was returning from the fire, when the vehicle capsized, and one of the occupants named Goakin fell on his head, sustaining concussion of the brain. He was removed to the hospital. It is feared that his injuries will prove ff\tal. The total losses at the fire were : South British, LIOOO ; New Zealand, L 350 ; Imperial, L2OO ; Union, L2OO ; Standard, LS(0; -Royal, L7los.
