! LATEST WAR AND GENERAL NEWS. (reuter's telegrams, per press agency.) London, December 20. The opening of Parliament on the 17th January is confirmed. The Standard states that the Ministry will propose an
increase of the army. Other Conservative journals state that German support to Russia is a real danger to British interests. (special to the press agency.) London, December 18. Germany and Austria both decline the Porte's mediation proposal.
Mr. Layard has informed the Porte that England continues neutral. The Greek Government has decided upon a peace policy. 6,000 additional Russian troops are mobilised at Plevna. Russian troops are advancing in every direction. A Cabinet Council will shortly agree as to England's reply to the Porto's despatch soliciting mediation. December 19. The Cabinet met to-day. It is understood that England has arranged for the purchase of the Turkish fleet. The meeting of Parliament is convoked for an earlier period for war preparations. The Government has ordered all vessels refitting to be immediately ready for sea. Gourka is advancing on Sophia. The Servians have captured Merrimous. Six thousand Turks are advancing to the succour of Scutari and Antivri. Snow delays the Russian artillery in Asia.
DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. [RENTER'S TELEGRAMS, PER PRESS AGENCY.] Melbourne, December 21. The Council laid aside the Appropriation Bill without a division. The Assembly has adjourned to the sth February. Several important measures remain undealt with. The Postmaster-General asked the Council to restore the Payment of Members Bill to the Paper, to be dealt with on its merits. The Government lias not yet indicated what course they intend pursuing respecting the Appropriation Bill. Sydney, December 21. A telegram from the Secretary to the Famine Fund at Madras states that in consequence of the favorable prospects collections may cease. The total subscriptions from all sources amount to L 890,000. Business is stagnant. All quotations are unchanged. Adelaide quotations : —Wheat, ss. 2d. to ss. 3d. ;, Hour, Ll3 to Ll3 10s.
