Melbourne, November 28,
Mr. Berry, in introducing the Payment of Members item 011 the Estimates, referred to the undoubted privileges of the Assembly in dealing with the question in the manner proposed, and said that tnu Legislative Council would have thrown out the Land Tax if it had dared. It would also throw out the Appropriation Bill if it dared, but it would be its sudden death-knell. The Council would thenceforth be a name only in history, but would not be known in the legislation of the Colony. They would be guilty of an act of revolution, and every member of that Chamber who upheld it would be stigmatised as a traitor and revolutionist. However dire might be the consequences, they would be responsible for the act. There are GOO candidates at the civil service examination, 114 of whom are ladies.

The horses were got out with great difficulty, and but for the assistance of neighbours the whole main building would have been burned down.
