AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

(per s.s. tararua at the bluff.)

Melbourne,

It has been resolved to recognise the services of Sir Redmond Bany, in connection with our public institutions, and notably the University and Public Library, in the form of a commemoratory ['? statue.] A child six years of age was burned to death yesterday in a wooden house at Sandhurst. The Wolverine and Sapphire left the bay this morning. The s.s. .Northumberland arrived in 55 days from London.

[PER IIOTOJtUA, AT AUCKLAND.]

Melbourne, November 28,

Mr. Berry, in introducing the Payment of Members item 011 the Estimates, referred to the undoubted privileges of the Assembly in dealing with the question in the manner proposed, and said that tnu Legislative Council would have thrown out the Land Tax if it had dared. It would also throw out the Appropriation Bill if it dared, but it would be its sudden death-knell. The Council would thenceforth be a name only in history, but would not be known in the legislation of the Colony. They would be guilty of an act of revolution, and every member of that Chamber who upheld it would be stigmatised as a traitor and revolutionist. However dire might be the consequences, they would be responsible for the act. There are GOO candidates at the civil service examination, 114 of whom are ladies.

At the invitation of Commodore Hoskins and tlie officers of the Wolverine, a large party, including the Governor, assembled on board the vessels Wolverine and Sapphire. Both leave to-movrow, the former visiting Portland cu ronU to Sydney. The Sapphire goes to Sydney, thence to Samoa. The Wolverine wu'l reach Syduey about Christmas, and next proceed to New Zealand. There have been large sales of fencing wire and corrugated iron plate, and owing to advices of short shipment a rise will probably occur in prices. A fire broke out at the Victoria Hotel, Essendon, by which the whole of the training stables were destroyed. The horses were got out with great difficulty, and but for the assistance of neighbours the whole main building would have been burned down.

A young man named Edward Stevens has been charged at the City Police Court with the embezzlement of L 670 of the moneys of his employers, W. and H. Lambert. He was remanded.

Adelaide, November 28.

A frightful murder has been committed at Port Augusta. A man named Fagan split the head of another named Bonner, while his victim was fast asleep. In the Assembly the Hon. Mr. Boucaut submitted his revised summary of the revenue and expenditure for the year ended 30th June, 1877. showing a debit balance of L 16,365. A sale of 20,000 bushels new wheat has been made for delivery at Port Adelaide during the month of December at from ss. to ss. Id. per bushel.

The Australian cricketers, after playing at Maitland and Hunter River, will finish their Australian engagements at Adelaide; thence take steamer to New Zealand, and return to Sydney in February in time for the Colonial match.
