The Chairman saul that when_ the Council did him the honor to elect him as their Chairmau, !:;» found fcho <ill empty, but now, at the cad ■>: the ycr.r on !*••»»•. ning, he left them with a very largo balance with which to commence the new year. ; ho roads and bridges belonging to the C-mnvv were also in a far better condition than they where when the County took them over. The County Council had now under its control about 200 miles of main roads. In connection with this lie would like to say that, if every road in the County was to be taken over by the Council, the Road Boards would have to cease to exist, or else the ratepayers would have to make up their minds for a much larger rate. 'Six pounds had also been erected during the year, and two cithers were in course or construction. The Chairman then d'ait with tne iinneial position of the County, the greater portion «.if which has alroauy been published in the balance-sheet. He thought it would be better if the "Comity joined some other Counties in appointing a permanent Valuator. He concluded by thanking the Council for the courtesy they had shown him during his term of office. He hoped that his successor would receive the same treatment at their hands. Mr. W.
