WELLINGTON. November 27

The superintendent of the Cable Company at Sydney notiiies that the steamer Duke of Edinburgh was repairing the Singapore-Batavia cable when the line steamer left Banjoewangi on the 14th. The Duke of Edinburgh may, however, be expected at Port Darwin about the end of the month. The Torres Straits mail steamer reaches Townsville (the first telegraph station), on the 29th.

A fire occurred at the Hntt to-day in a boot and shoe store, belonging to Mr. M'lvenssie. No one was on the premises. The stock was insured for L2OO in the Liverpool, L >udo;i, and Globe offices. A lire occurred at- Palmerston (North), to-day in Mr. J. H. Snelson's house. The fire was got under before the building was entirely destroyed. The probable loss is L 2400 in the South British, L 630 iu the Victoria, and heavily in the Liverpool, London, and Globe, though the exact amount is not yet known.

After a very long sitting the jmy in the Woodville murder case returned a verdict of " Wilful Murder" against Harry Thompson, the mate of deceased.

AUCKLAND. November 27.

The Auckland Steam Packet Company meets to-morrow to consider the propriety of winding-up. The tender of Richard White (L 0700) for reclamation between the Waternians' Stairs and the Nevy Dock, was accepted by the Harbor Board to-day. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board, a resolution was passed, urging the Government to employ Mr. Price to complete the purchase of the To Aroha block, so as to carry out the agreement with Mr. Broomhall, and open land for settlement.

The acceptances for the Auckland Cup and Steeplt chase close on Friday. Thirty horses in Auckland are training for the forthcoming races. Several are expected from the South. The Regatta Club has decided that the large yacht race shall be open only to vessels between six and fifteen tons inclusive ; the amateur rowing race is restricted to clubs formed three months before the race.

A dividend has been declared by the National Fire and Marine Insurance Company. The total receipts for the Indian Famine Fund amounts to L 1849 18s. Gd.

GREYMOUTH. November 27. The salmon ova are now all hatched. The estimated number of live fish is from 40,000 to 45,000. * NABIER. November 27. The amount collected to date for the Indian Famine Fund in Hawke's Bay is L 1470, aud there are subscriptions still coming in.
