CRICKET
PAPAKAIO AND AWAMOKO V. OAMARU. The match between a combined tleven from Papakaio and Awanioko against an eleven of the Oainaru Cricket Club was played on Saturday afternoon. Some very fair cricket was shown on both sides, though many of the players did not appear ia anything like proper form. Tne
country team was shorthanded, arid had to make up the eleven with substitutes. Mr. Sumpter, for the Oaniaru team, played well in each innings, and Mr. J. Miilington, for the country, played a capital not out innings of 23. The bowling and fielding on each side was passable, though not brilliant. The following are the scores : OAMARI7 C. This match was played at Timarii on Saturday, on the ground of fie Tnnaru Athletic Club, which was kindly lent for the occasion. The representatives of the Oaniaiu Grammar School took tneir departure by the first train in tiie morning, and although t .e weather then looked anything but promising by the time tney arrived in 'I imuru the sky cleared and t.it-re was every indication of a line day. Toe Oaniaru eleven were met at the station by several of the Tini.iril players and driven to the ground, wliici is situated about two miles out of Tnnaru. It was arranged to decide tlu match by the first innings if time did not pennt the finishing of t;ie game. The Timaru captain having won the toss, sent On mam to tiie wickets. Thornton and Jackson were sent to face the bowling of King and Mansfield. Both had a very shortjife, Thornton being clean bowled by King, and Jackson, after scoring a single, succumbed to another " trimmer" from King. Davidson next appeared at the wickets, but after scoring a single and hitting Mansfield away to leg for four, his wickets were scattered by Mansfield. Bennett (captain) next appeared, and although he remained a long time at the wickets, very few runs were got, owing to the smart fielding of the Tnnaru eleven and the excellence of King's bowling. Bennett, afti r scoring five, was caught by Mansfield. G r iffitli, after making a single, was bowled by King. Moore and Baker retired after scoring three singles each, the former being bowled by King and the latter run out. Ham was bowled by King without scoring. Hardy next appeared, but was quickly disposed of after scoring three. Smith played more freely than any of the others. After scoring three oil' Mansfield he played a " maiden" from King, and during the next over he drove Mansfield to long-on for four, the Oainaru team cieering loudly. Hook scored three singles, and was caught by Mansfield. Roberts and Smith were sent to face the bowling of Bennett and Davidson, the wickets of the forui'-a' being scattered by Bennett's first bad, and Smith succumbed to Bennett's fifth ball, after scoring a single. Davidson bowled the next over, winch was anything but successful, being off t'le wicket altogether. Toe scoring of J imam was very poor in tile first innings, there being no leS3 than eight " duck's eggs," t.ie only scores b.ing Smith, Mansfield, and Grubb, who retired after scoring a single eac : i. In the second innings of Oainaru the only otie wuo reached double figures was B-nuett, who drove King into tne pavilion for six. The second innings of Tnnaru was not finished, there bang t'.ree wickets down for 24 runs woeti time was called. Bocli teams were t.en driven to the Royal Hotel for lunch, where everyone was prepared to do justice to the good things proVi. e<l. Mr. Scott (Rector of the Tnnaru School), in. responding, sud a defeat was not.nug but what was expicted. He bad never taken much interest in the guile, but he intended to practice regulany, so tiiat when tlu-y vi-ited Oainaru they would give a better account of themselves. He referred to the great benefit derived by the pupils having a master present during practice. . The party then wended its way to the station, and after each of the captains had called on their teams for three cheers for their opponents, the Oamani team took their departure.
