It has been suggested that a public meeting should be held to consider the political situation ; but the Times argues that it should not be done until after the financial statement is made, and says that its object should clearly be to judge between the necessity *for a dissolution, or the continuance of the present Government in power. Forwarded, on account of the Indian Famine Fund, LT.OIB. Mr. Kedwood has purchased Ariel and Lonirlands, from Mi-. Farmer. Mr. Redwood has sold Traducer, Waimea colt, one month old, to Kitchen, of Dunedin, for live huudred pounds. e ; AUCKLAND. November 16. The Choral Hall was densely packed tonight at the public meeting convened by the Mayor to consider the present political situation, over a thousand persons being crowded into it. The first resolu-tion--moved by Mr. 80-dan.- seconded by Mr. Aitken, aiid carried amid enthusiastic demonstration —was as follows :—'' That, in ttie opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that the financial position of the Colony should be placed before the counfy by the present Government ; and if a.factious opposition be continued, that tlie Government should immediately apply for a dissolution." The meeting is proceeding.

At :tlie' public meeting held last night the first n solution was carried unani- j uiously. ■-■. The second resolution passed was—" That copies be sent to Sir George Grey and the Auckland City members, Mr. Reader Wood, and Dr. Wallis." A resolution was also carried to the effect that an address be prepared to the Governor urging S;r Geo"ge Grey's claim to a dissolution, and asserting that it is the only solution for the present evenlybalanced state of parties. The meeting tcave three hearty cheers for Sir George Grey. GI3BORNS. 5 November 16. A disastrous fire took place this morning, and destroyed a vast amount of valuable property. The fire-arose tirst at ! about 11.30 in a building in course of erection in the rear of the Masonic Hotel stables. Everything in the township was i as dry as tinder owing to the long drought. The flames caught the Masonic stables, and a small ho-ise adjoining, occupied by Mr. Stevenson. A large crowd was soon on the spot. The stables were saved but m-.antiine sparks blew over Teat and Co.'s sMop, igniting the Masjnic Hotel—t! e fiinsb hotel in Glsborne. Jt was soon iu a mass of flames and the long range of offices adjoiuiu ■; and the Standard newspaper office, all of which w. re speedily burnt to the ground. Tue Herald office was in gtvat dang-r for some t:me, and also a private residence at the back. Volunteers with buckets of water succeeded in saving thisjorner. T.iare was a yood deal of water from pump-; and wells in tne vlchiicy, plenty of buckets and axes, and willing volunteers, but a total absence of fire extinguishingappliances. In the house in course of erection, where the lire originated, the property of Mr. Stephenson, the miscuiel' was'done in an incredibly short time. The whole street is strewed with billiard tables, hotel furniture, chairs, and every description of valuables. Mr. W. F. Crawford, Mayor, has sworn in twentylive special constables for the purpose of watering tne em Iters, and guarding against a fresh outbreak. Most of the p.ooerty was insured. Captain Strikely, master and sole owner of the-barque Emma, and a seaman named Carl Rubeg, were swept overboard and drowned on the Ist insfc. on the passage from Mauritius.
