WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Council was held to-day at the County Chambers, when there were present Messrs. Wheatley (in the chair), Craig, Duncan, Johnston, and W. Sutherland. ATHENAEUMS, ETC. The Secretaries of the Otepopo, Hampden, and Kakanui Athenaeums and Mechanics' Institutes wrote, asking the Council to grant subsidies to those institutions. After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Craig, seconded by Mr. Duncan, that the sum of L2O should be voted to each riding as subsidies in aid libracies. USE OF ROOM. It was decided to comply with the request of the Waitaki County Acclimatisation Society for the use of the Council Chamber for meetings free of charge. A similar application having been received from the North Otago Coursing Club, it was decided to grant the use of the Chamber on the payment of ss. per meeting. MAEREWHENUA ROAD. A letter was received from Mr. E. Menlove, agreeing to convey to the Council the necessary land for the new road through section 4, block 2, Maerewhenua district, on condition that the Council conveyed to ) im the old road-line. It was resolved to consent to the arrangement. ACCLIMATISATION FEES. A letter was read from the UnderSecretary, giving the Council authority to hand over the acclimatisation fees at present held by the Council to the Waitaki County Acclimatisation Society. The money was ordered to be handed over to the Society. BALANCE-SHEET. The Clerk read the balance-sheet for the past year, which was approved of and ordered to be signed by the Chairman. AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION. A letter was read from Mr. J. Church, Secretary of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association, asking the Council to vote a sum of money as a subsidy to the Association. It was decided to allow the letter to lay over until the next meeting. WAIICOURA CREEK. A letter was read from Mr. Peter Aitchison, calling attention to the necessity for the Waikoura Creek being cleaned
out, in order to allow of it being able to carry off the water in time of flood.—The letter"was ordered to lay over until next meeting, the Inspector to report upon the matter. TENDERS. The tenders for the various works were opened and considered, the following being accepted:—Gravelling portion of road between Maheno and Hampden, Messrs. Bigger and Robertson, L2 per chain ; gravelling road at Kaka Hill and Port Moeraki road, Mr. William Nicholson, L2 15s. and L2 193. per chain. ROAD FROM MAHEN'O TO KAKANUI MOUTH. Mr. Craig moved that the road from the Kakanui Mouth to the Maheno township should be declared a County road. Mr. Duncan seconded the motion. On the motion of Mr. Johnston, the matter was deferred until next meeting. ROAD FUOM KAKANUI TO OAMARU. Mr. Duncan moved that the road from Kakanui to Oamaru be declared a County road. Seconded by Mr. Craig. This was also ordered to stand over until next meeting. ROAD THROUGH PAPAKAIO PRE-EMPTIVE. Mr. Duncan moved that the sum of L 550 should be paid to the Waitaki Road Board for the road through the Papakaio Pre-emptive. i The Chairman declared the motion out of order. The meeting then terminated.
