In consequence of an announcement |in our columns, a large number of persons congregated at the Oamaru baths—some to take part in, and oi hers to witness, a swimming match for "a gold chain and a watch." We inserted the information in good faith, and at the request of Mr. Beattie, who led us to believe that it was being done with the knowledge of the bath authorities. This, ib appears, was not the case, and the latter have found it necessary to insert an advertisement in this evening's issue, notifying the public that no swimming matches are sanctioned by them unless announced under the authority of the bath directors. '1 his step is very desirable, inasmuch as if Jack, Tom, or Harry are to be allowed the use of the baths for such purposes at any moment they please, tnat which was intended as a means of recreation and invigorafcion will become a re ort for gambling schemers, who will use the baths as a means for getting rid of their Brummagem finery by mean* of sweepstakes.
