MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Gibbs, Mainland, Headland, Procter, Liddle, and v amilton. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. The following tende.s were accepted:— Works in Reed-street, tvlr. Patrick Corcoran, L 195 12s. 6d. ; works in Exe-street, Messrs. M'Leod and Eraser, L2> 10s. Councillor Liddle presented a petition from ratepayers in Aln-stfeet, asking that that part of Aln street between Kden-street and Cross-lane be made available for light traffic.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Mr. John Maukay obtained permission to erect a pig-stye ou Reserve C, the same to be removed when required. The request of Mr. S. Fariar for earth to fill up a hole in his s-ction was declined. The application of the I.aths Company for gas to be laid on to the premies was grafted, and the tar IT of charges for the baths, as submitted by the directors, was agreed to. The bailance-sheet was read, showing the receipts and exp. nd : ture of the Corporation for the half year ending oOt > September last. The repoi't of the Engineer was read, and it was resolved that the Engineer have aithbiity to proceed with the work at the Hump Site until next meeting; tiiat the Council approves of the plan of I sis-street diversions submitted by the Engineer, and that the necessary application be made to the Government for the road, as indicated in. red, and for the land on the south Fide of the road, being parts of sections S, 9, 10, 11, 12, block LXXXI. ; that tenders be i all d for bridge over railway at Wear-street, to be in by next ordinary meeting. The Keserves Comoittee reported that they had arranged with a Sub-Committee of the Acclimatisation S-ciety as to the lea-e of that part of the Ga den Reserve Ling west of a line in continuation or the eastern boundary of Mr. Simpson's property. —The Byelaws and Committee was instructed to prepare and submit at next meeting, for the approval of the Council, the heads of an agreement with the Acclimatisation Soei ty. The accounts, amounting to L 370 9s. lid., were passed for payment. The necessary pipes for the new gasometer were directed to be ordered at once. On the motion of Councillor Gibbs, it was resolved, " '1 hat tenders be called for works in Aln-street, from Eden-street to Ousestreet; tenders to be in by next meeting of Council; and that the Works Comnvttee report to next meeting what amount of fencing will be required, and its probable co t; also the cost of any side approaches that will be necessary." Ou the motion of Councillor Mainland, it was resolved, "That the Works Committee, with the Engineer, be requested to report as to the best mode o improving the Lagoon, so as to do away with the nuisance arising from decaving vege able matter, and to confine the flow of water to as narrow a channel as po-sibie." The Council then adjourned.
