RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before 'l'. \V. rxisKKit, Esq., R.M.) DUL'NK AND DISORDERLY. John Crawford, charged with having been drunk and disorderly, was discharged with a caution. LARCENY. Christina Messeeh, on remand from Timaru, was charged with having stolen a number of articles of the value of L 6, the property of John Moore. The prisoner pleaded Not guilty. Sub-Inspe tor .-niith asked tor a remand until 'I hursday next, in order to allow Detective Neill, of Timaru, to attend and give evidence. Prisoner asked to have the wife of the prosecutor summoned as a witness, in order to show that although the artich s were found in the house where lie was residing in Timaru. Mrs. Moore had taken them there. the application for remand was granted. ASSAULT. William Hamilton was charged with having, on the 13th instant, assaulted Edward Thomas. The defendant admitted the assault, but pleaded provocation. Evidence having been taken as to the nature of the assault, the d bndant stated that the plaintiff, with another man named Maloney. had been sub-contractors at the Waterworks. He had been wot king for them for 21 days, and had only received a day and a half's pay, Maloney having levanted. The fact of having been "done " out of his money had made him angry, and caused him to assault Thomas. He was now sorry for what he had done. His Worship inflicted a line of LI, together with ISs. costs.
