DUNEDIN. October 15. Thomas Rofs, who gave himself into custody at Balclntha on Monday for wilfully setting fire to the Crown Hotel Stables at that place oh the 3rd inst., has made a statement te> the effect that a person residing in the tlistrict ottered him a reward for So doing, and likewise supplied him with a bottle of kerosene for the purpose of ensuring the success of the undertaking. He also states that after he set fire to the stables he smothered the flames with his ce>at, and thus prevented the spread of tlie flames. He will be brought up on Wednesday. In Proudfoot's case, Messrs. Stewart and Denniston appear fe>r the prosecution, and Messrs. Smith and Chapman for the defence. Mr. Beal is foreman of the jury. Great interest is felt in the trial. The prosecutrix has been under examination all day. 3.45 p.m. Evidence has just been given by Mrs. Angus and her daughter that Mr. Proudfoot promised to marry the latter if proceedings were quashed.
