There has been no important battle during the last fortnight, but prolonged, yet undecided, fighting has been proceeding before Kars. The Russians are carefully preparing for the winter campaign. A Turkish official despatcli reports a great battle at Gumii, in Asia Minor, with a favourable result to the Turks. a Russian unofficial report states that on t!ie 2 id the Russians captured the entrenchments near Kars, on Mukhtar's left, repulsing large masses of Turks, and subsequently abandoned them owing to want of water. Russian loss, 83 officers and 3200 niuii ; Turkish loss enormous. A Turkish offieial despatch from Mukhtar Pasha reports a complete victory on the 2.: d. Tue Russians attacked the whole line, but were compelled to retire, the Turks pursuing tiiein to Opacui. Russian loss, 5000 ; Turkish, unknown.
Other accounts say the battle was indecisive.
The Cz;ir lias resolved to remain with the army until the war is ended. There is muc.i sickness among the Russians round Plevna. The Turks are not answering the bombardment. Operations at Sc.iipka have been stopped by the fog A Russian unofficial despatch states that the Turkish left, supporting the garrison at Kars, attacked tne Russian right on the 4cKh, but was defeated with great loss. Stilieman P.tsha lias been appointed Comniander-in-Ohief of the Dmube. Meheinet Ali has been recalled Raouff Pasha is in command of the Balkans. The Russian head-quarters has been removed to Sistova.
