The Evening Mail. MONDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1877.
Despite all maimer of nndig lifted schaminy in the attempt to retain power, the Motley Government i>f New Zealand has been c-ini n.itt.-d to the shades of the departed. Of course, in common with t-very body else, we are inclined to be ju l >.l nfc ; but we cannot help a feeling somewhat akin to the sadness that creeps over one who views the vanquised and lifeles3 corpse of a lawless ruffian. On such an occa-ion one is lad to exclaim, "Had he but used his energies in a better cai.se, how different would have been the result ?" " They would have thrown their Attorney-General overboard, because they thought that he was their Jonah; Messrs. Ormond and Reid would have resigned ; and, in fact, they were willing t> > make any sacrifice lather than that it should be said that they were defeated. But such patching up would not suit the country; and it was plain to be seen that these proposed concessions were but the precursors of inevitable dissolution. The question is often asked, " Who is there fit to take the reins of Government ?" We shall not have to wait long for a satis r actory solution of this problem. It h iiot unlikely that Mr. Pjtzherbert will be the leader of the new Government.
