(FROM 'I'HK l'!i KKS AIiHNOY.) ♦ WELLINGTON. October 4. Preliminary steps are being taken here with the view of forming a lucal insurance company. The bodies of Paul Christenson and James Luna, lost last July, have been found in the Manuwatu river. Large quantities of wreckage and ship's sto:es stdl continue to be washed adiore on the beach between Tita and Terawiti, comprising a miscellan 'ous collection of articles such as kegs of brandy, boxes of candles, parts of tallies chairs, and ocher furniture, fragments of piano*, &e. A meeting of creditors in the estate of James O'Shea, merchant, who failed some time ag<», was held this afternoon, when the bankrupt received his discharge. Mrs. relinquished LIOO3 worth of her personal prope.ty, though the creditors' claim on the same, ac ording to their legal stand point, on y amounted to L2,)0 9s. The Supreme Court was occupied all day over the second trial of Daniel Haggerty for burning down his accommodation house. After lieing absent three hours, the jury came back and asked if he had any pecuniary interest in burning the place. The answer was that this did not come out in evidence. The jury are still locked up. Mr. G. October 5.
In the case of Daniel Hagierfcy, for arson, the second jury were lacked up all last night and discharged this morning, not having agreed. The case will be tried next Monday before a third jury and another judge. It lias leaked out that on the first jury there were originally seven for a conviction and tive for the acqu ttal of the prisoner, and then they changed to eleven for the acquittal and one for conviction. On the second jury eleven new men were for conviction, but the twelfth, who had been on the previous jury, stood out for an acquittal. CHRISTUHUItCH. October 4. All the members of the medical staff of the Christchurch Hospital ceased attendance to-day, for the following reasons : —Some time ago Dr. Campbell, one of the Hospital surgeons, brought a case in the Supreme Court for the recovery of 1>503 from the executors of a private patient, when Dr. Campbell said he gave him a deposit receipt for the LSOO just prior to death. The amount could not be recovered, and subsequently the medical staff of the Hospital, considering the evidence in Court disclosed improper c 11duct on the part of Dr. Campbell, they petitioned the Government to remove him from the Hospital staff. The Government took no action. The application was repeated without effect; and to-day Drs. Turnbull, Deamer, Nedwill, Powell, Harp, Doyle, and Franlcish ceased attendance at the Hospital. There is 110 one now in charge of the medical cases. Dr. Prins continues to aot with Dr. Campbell in surg'cal cases. KUMARA. October 5. Thomas Eyan has been brought up charged with murdering Joseph Daniels ou the 10th March last. Twenty witnesses are to be examined, and the case is proceeding.
