LATEST WAR NEWS. London, September 22. Ignatieff is in disgrace, and has gone to Khiva, Nothing official has been heard of Mehemet Ali's movements. September 24. Plevna is nearly surrounded by the Russian forces. Hafiz Pasha readied Dubrick with supplies, when Ids convoy was attacked by fifteen batallions of Russian infantry and three regiments of cavalry, but the attacking, party were defeated, according to the Turkish account. Snliemau Pasha renewed the assault at Fort Nicholas, Siiipka Pass, last Friday, but without success. Bombay, September 24. A Russian oilicial despatch says the Turks resumed bombarding the Nicholas redoubt, and then assaulted it unsuceessfully. The continues in Asia. General Terkugasen has defeated Ismael Pasha with great loss. A Turkish official despatch says a large Turkish convoy of ammunition is within two hours' march of Plevna. The result of the fighting at Biela is stiil indecisive. Sydnay, September 2d. The Herald?s special, dated 24th September, says the accounts of last Friday's fighting near Plevna were exaggerated. The Turks admit that the action was indecisive. The attack made upon the Russian entrenched positions at Charking and Chernova, commanding the main road to Biela was successfully repulsed, the Czarewitch receiving large reinforcements. Osniau Pasha has been urged to make a sortie, in order to effect a junction of the two forces. The Times says the Austrian Ambassador at Constantinople had a positive interview with the Sultan. He remonstrated against the continued atrocities, hinted at mediation, .and showed that moderation would be politic : declaring that Germany would not be indifferent to Russian humiliation. Seventy thousand Turks are said to have been sacrificed in the various attempts to take the Shipka Pass. * GENERAL NEWS. London, September 22. Gambetta's sentence has been confirmed. ♦ DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, September 29. The Tararua left for New Zealand on Wednesdaj', but returned this morning, in tow of the Claude Hamilton, broken down.
