(from the press agency.) WELLINGTON-. September 28. Dr. Lemon has just received the following from Batavia, dated 27th :—" Unable to communicate with Sirgapore since yesterday afternoon. Messages of the 25th and* 26th still on hand. Mails leave Batavia on the 12th, 19th, and 2(hh October. Notice shall he given if any other postal opportunities occur in the meantime." DUNEDIN. September 27. The allotment of Union shares has gi \'en the greatest dissatisfaction, very little inquiry having been made, and no discretion used. People who do a large amount of insuring hardly got any. AUCKLAND. September 27. At + he inquest on the woman burned at the the evidence showed conclusively that the lire orig nated in her cell. She had taken some matches in the presence of visitors in the afternoon, and a search failed to discover them. She had never been taken out of the cell. The jury returned a verdict that Mary Ann Fortune met her death by burning in her ceil at Whau Lunatic Asylum, but how or by what means the lire originated, there is no evidence to show. The jury appended the j following rider—"That the dicipline carried out in the Auckland Asylum is of a most
defective character, and that the Government are greatly to blame for there being insufficient appliances for extinguishing fire. —©—- — : — KUMARA. September 27. At the Police Court to-day, Ryan, charged with the murder or Daniels, was remanded for a week. Bail was refused.
