WELLINGTON. September 14. A fisherman brought word here to-day that two fishing smacks left Port Underwood for Wellington, and that while midway in Co'...k Straits there was a strong breeze blowing. The gale freshened somewhat, and when the crew of the foremost boat, which was a niileahiad, looked b.ick, they say the oti-er vessel (the Blue had disappeared. At great risk they put back, but could find no trace of the boat, or the crew of three who were in it. After a vain search, they made the Pilot Station, and walked into town. The names of the missing men are - Jeremia'i Way, George Dominic, and C.iarles Amite. Tlie Blue Bell was only four tons. All the men were unmarried. September 15.
Mr. Lnekie, without authority, telegraphed last night in the name of the Press A'/ency that cable communication was interrupted with Europe, except via Siberia. The statement is incorrect. The following is official: —The Auioy and Shanghai line has been iuterupted since the 7th inst., and the Penang and Rangoon line since the 10th inst. The only route now open is between Penang and Madras; but there will be some little delay in retransmitting messages from Rangoon. LAWRENCE. September 14. A private house, the property of Mr. Meyer, was totally destroyed by fire this morning at daybreak. The house was situated in the suburbs, and before the fire-bell rang the.roof had fallen in. The place was detached, or the consequences would have been serious, as the watermains do not reach it. The fire brigade was on the spot, but their services were of no avail. The family had barely time to escape. The building was insured, and the furniture for L2OO in the Victoria office. ♦ HOKITIKA. September 14. 6541 ounces of gold have been shipped to Melbourne from the West Coast ports , per Tararua. Value, L 26,000. I
