BARBOUR BOARD.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board was held to-day at the Harbour Chambers. 'J here were present—Messrs. Stewart (in the chair). Gilchrist, Lemon, Borrie, "Meek, Meh'ove. and Sumpter, MIXCTKS, ETC. The minutes of the last meeting were read and e <nfnm»d. and the outward correspondence was read and approved. "I It was resolved that the present fence be shifted .so as-to throwr the whole'area into one, and that then the paddock be let as a whole for five j-ears, with .the light.to the possession at-any time on giving six months' notice. A telegram was read'from Mr. W. Guthrie, stating that 479 c isks of cement were on board the.Martin Scott'for the Board, BKEAKWATEK AT GISBORNE. A letter was read from the Town Clerk of Gisborne applying for information with

' RAILWAY AXP SIDINGS A letter was lead from Mr. Lowe, Resident Kngineer, in reply to one from the Board with reference to railway crossings and sidings near the Lagoon. The writer intimated that he had r ierred ihe application to the (Government, with a request for their immediate attention. It was resolved that the Secretary should a=k Mr. Burnett t-day to telegraph to the Government, asking for an immediate reply.
TRAMWAY CHARGES. The following letter was tea I : "Oainaru, 12di September, 1577. "To the Chairman of the Harbour Board, Oamaru.
" We the undersigned millers and grain merchants of Oamaru would most respeetfu.ly call your attention to the following statement, showing how hardly the pressnt tariff of charges from the Railway-station to the Breakwater (known as terminal charge ) press upon us as shippers of mauulaotured breidstulfs, The Government railways carry flour, bran. &c, oh the various 1 nes on the scale of 220011i5. to the ton, which, when receiv. d into the Oamaru station, for shipment, is reduced to 200ill'os. for (lour and 14!)0lhs. for bran. Again, say, a Dunedin mi ler or merchant wishe-. grain shipped, he gets ten (10) ba;s to the ton ; or, say, at the ra e of Is. Gd.aton railway ■ charge, and 2s. 3d. a ton Harbour Board charge; whens'iioping 20 baas "rain, hegets for his 7s (id.
