The annual report of the Insurance Commissioner shows 1400 new policies, issued for L 563,923 ; new premiums thereon, L 20,777 ; total annual income, L 91.995. Death claims, L 11,750 ; accumulated fund, L 219,334 ; being an increase during the year of L 65,677. Number of policies in force, 7343 ; assuring, L2,734,G02. It is stated that there are only seven companies in Great Britain whose new business exceeds the above, and that in their case there has been a greater proportional cost. Mr. Thomsis reports : - Flour, Colonial, LlB to LlB 10s ; Adelaide, L 23 10s ; oats, 3s lOd to 4s ; bran, Is ; wheat, 4s 6d ; pollard, 7s b\l: maize, 4s 6d ; potatoes, L 3 ; hams, 9|d ; bacon, Bjd ; cheese, 7d. September 7The following tenders were received for the Clinton contract of the Waitaki-In-vercargill Railway:—Accepted: Proudfoot and M'Kay, L 37,600. Declined : Henderson and Fergusson, L 37,773 ; Martin, Hughes, and Co., L 38,327 ; J. B. Blair and Co., L41 ; 180 ; Topham and Angus, L 43,050.
