John Madden, who was sentenced the other day to a months' imprisonment for vagrancy, was forwarded to Dunedin this morning. Contrary to expectations, John Chalker was not sent to Dunedin. as it is expected that the necessary sureties for his liberation to hail, pending the decision on the appeal against the conviction, will he forthcoming to-day or tomorrow. In the meantime Chalker is busily employed white-washing the walls of the Oamaru (laid. There was no sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning. The Papakaio ploughing match will take place on .Friday next. It will be seen by an advertisement in another column that a special train will leave Oamaru for (iihson's siding at a quarter to ten o'clock, returning at live p.m. The monthly sitting of the District Court will beheld on Fiidaynext, and the Clerk of the Court gives notice that the Court will sit at 2 p.m. instead of 10 a.m.

Keren ing to the conduct of the Government in connection with the Oainani Mail libel case, the f'lutha Loivh'f remarks : "The Government is at prisent defendant in one libel c.se— that of Russell v. the Waha Munri newspaper, which is said to cost £1(10 a day. We presume Jones' case will necessitate a like expenditure. Thus the Government have entered very heartily into a new channel for getting rid of the surplus revenues of the country."
