It is said there is much dissatisfaction felt by the supporters of the " Medical Practitioners Bill" at the manner in which it was shelved by the House on Thursday night. The order of the day for the second reading came on unexpectedly, other orders having been postponed, and many of its supporters were away. They say they are assured they have a majority in both Houses. AUCKLAND. September 1. The Chamber of Commerce has passed resolutions supporting the Wellington Chamber's recommendation that a law be enacted to stop absconding debtors by telegraph, when creditors lodge sufficient security with the authorities as a guarantee of the bona fides. The Chamber has also forwarded the opinion of Mr. Hesketh, solicitor, embodying various recommendations, and showing that there is absolutely no legal means of stopping a debtor, even when it i 3 known he is going away. Mr. Grey, of the Customs, has arrived at Russell. He reports that he landad at Kirikiri and the adjacent islands, and searched thoroughly, but found no trace of wreckage. Tlie fires seen by Captain Savoy must have been Maori fires on Cape Kirikiri. The Roman Catholic petition asking that the religious clauses be struck out of the Education Bdl has received over 2000 signatures. INVERCARGILL. September 1. At the Resident Magistrate's Court here to-day, two respectable-looking bricklayers, named Woodward and G. Bailey, were charged by the police with stealing at various times ornamental trees from three different nurseries. A large amount of evidence was taken, and the case was remanded till Monday, a point being raised whether larceny can be established when there was no dwellinghouse in the nursery.
