The Evening Mail. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1877.

As announced in another column a lecture will be delivered at the Masonic Hall this evening in aid of the funds of ihe Mechanics' Institute, by Dr. E Ellis. The lecturer has chosen for his subject the " Life and times of Michael Angelo." Such an interesting theme should attract a large audience, and no lover of Art should miss the opportunity of hearing a discourse about the great architect, painter, and sculptor who flourished nearly four centuries ago. An Athletic Club has now been formed in Oamaru with every prospect of a successful career. At the adjourned meeting of gentlemen favourable to the formation of the Club, which was held at the Royal Hotel on Saturday evening, over 30 gentlemen were present. In the absence of Mr. O'Meagher, the convener of the meeting, Mr. Thornton was voted to the chair. After some discussion, it was unanimously resolved that an Athletic Club should be formed with a gymnasium in connection therewith ; and it was decided that the name of the Club should be "The Waitaki Amateur Athletic Club." The annual subscription was fixed at one guinea, payable in advance, honorary members to pay a similar amount. It was resolved that the Committee should consist of seven members, exclusive of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, ex officio members of the Committee ; five to form a quorum. The following gentlemen were elected office-bearers: — President, Mr. O'Meagher; Vice-President, Mr. Thornton; Hon. Secretary, Mr. Lintott'; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. F. Fenwiok; Committee, Messrs. Holdsworth, Caverhill, Burnett, Bennett, Millington, M'Donald, and Grant The Committee was empow-

ered to frame rules and regulations for the Club, to be submitted to the general meeting of members to be held at the Royal Hotel on Saturday, the 15tii instant:. The meeting terminated with'a vote of thanks to the Chairman. A meeting of the Committee of the North Otago Horticultural Society will take place at the Albion House this evening at 8 o'clock. The quarterly sitting of the Licensing Court will be held in the Court-house tomorrow, commencing at noon. The usual monthly meeting of the Committee of the North Otago Benevolent Society takes place this evening, at 7 o'clock. We have received the first number of the Waimate. Star, a weekly newspaper. It contains sixteen columns of interesting reading matter of all descriptions—political, local, and general, which cannot fail to be of interest to the inhabitants of Waimate and the surrounding district. The proprietor, in his introductory notice, states " that no one paper can fairly represent the differences of opinion and varied interests of the residents of a district." We fully agree with the truth of the remark, and sincerely hope the Waimate Star will meet with substantial support. Mr. Woolcock seems determined to add to the Parliamentary laurels he lias already gained. Having succeeded in being the meaus of extracting from the Government a psomise that next session they will make a change in the mode of taxation, he has now set himself to work upon another reform. He has given notice of the following motion : —"'J hat in the opinion of this House the present state of the franchise and electoral law is exceedingly unsatisfactory, and that the Attorney-General be requested to introduce a Bill to remedy the matter."
