AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
(Per City op Sydney, at Auckland.) The Australian dates are to August 24. Great destruction of property lias taken place at Wallend, Newcastle, owing to the falling in of a coal pit. The Wesleyan Chapel disappeared, and "Watkin s Hotel settled down. The streets are full of great openings. Considerable alarm has prevailed in the district. The Brisbane Exhibition was attended by 20,000 visitors in two days. The Governor of Queensland and Commodore Hoskins attended the hall at Brisbane in aid of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. All the business places at Geelong were closed for a day of humiliation and prayer for rain. Thomas Walker, formerly an undertaker and a member of the Sydney Municipal Council, has established his title to property in Wales to the value of a million sterling. In Melbourne the land tax resolution has been carried. The attempt to float the City of Foo Choo has been abandoned. In reply to a question, the Government said they were determined to carry out protection in its entirety.
