The residents of Otepopo will no doubt thoroughly appreciate the action of the Government witli regard to their reas_>nable request for a railway siding near the Otepopo river. In the House of Representatives, yesterday afternoon, Mr. Shkim.ski asked the Minister for Public Works whether the Government intended to comply with the request, and pointed out the necessity for the siding. To this question Mr. Ormosd repbed, in so many words, "We do not think th'j siding is required, but we will make further inquiries, and if we find the siding is actually required, we will take action." We should have thought the petition sent to the Ministry by the inhabitants of Otepopo, backed bj' the assurance of one of the members for the district, would have been sufficient to convince the Government that what was asked for was really required. The ways of the Ministry are extremely strange. Mr. Shrmski happens to give his vote with the Opposition, and not with the Ministry. Therein lies the cause of the Government not considering the siding necessary. If the siding had been asked for by a Ministerial follower, we should have had quite a different answer. We should then have had for a reply something to this effect : —' ; The Government recognise the necessity for the siding being made, and will take steps to have the work carried out." Mr. Shrimski's vote is not to be bought, and as a consequence the Otepopo people will not get their railway siding.
