The Russians have abandoned the town of Siiipka which is now occupied by the army of Sulieman Pasha. The Porte is concentrating a force of fifty thousand militia in Bulgaria as an army reserve. Colonel Valentine Baker commands the cavalry. Bombay, August 21, 2.20. An unofficial Russian account confirms the attack by Melikoff on the 18th. After capturing the first line of trenches, he fell back to his former position. There were many killed on boch sides. The Russians occupied a position between Galatz and Selvi.
General Gourka lost 4000 men in the retreat on Shipka. The Turks are preparing for the winter campaign.
