(from the press aoency.) AUCKLAND. August 21. William White Midley, an aged man, has been charged with indecent assaulr. upon a girl named Catherine Carr, twelve years old. He was remanded. The steamship Lionel was wrecked while entering Whangare Harbour. Five men were drowned. There was a heavy break on at the time. In crossing the bar the first sea broached the vessel to, the second breaker turned her over, and all hands aboard were drowned. One man stuck to the wreck till after sunset, strenuous efforts being made by those on shore to save him, but they failed. A boat was manned from shore three times, and was upset each time. Five hands were on board at the time of the wreck. The schooner Queen Bee has been wind bound for a fortnight through a continuous bar at the heads. The brigantine Odalik has just loaded, bound for Adelaide. NELSON". August 21. A share in the Queen Bee NY'reck Recovery Company, original price LSO, is now selling for L 320. , o DUNEDIN. August. 21. A general meeting of the Committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to-day. Several delegates from country Associations were present, and a liberal programme was adopted. The show takes place on the 29th of November, and every effort will be made to secure its success. o CHRISTCHURCH. August 22. Judge Johnston has delivered a very important judgment. A few days ago an application was made in Chambers to move Mr. H. E. Alport, one of the trustees in bankruptcy, from the trusteeship of the estate of Mr. Thomas Andrew. From the affidavits read when the case was argued, it appeared that at the advertised meeting of creditors there was no one present but Mr. Alport, who, although not a creditor, held several proxies. With one of these he proposed himself chairman, and with another he stconded the motion, and then as chairman of the meeting he declared the motion carried. The judgment of the Court pronounced the election to be null and void, and, morover, contended that there must be two persons to make a meeting. O NAPIER. August 22. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Robert France, on three cases of infringement of the Stamp Act, was fined L 5 for each case, for giving receipts for rent to Fortune and Black, bakers, without affixing a stamp thereto. The costs were L 4 10s. The prosecution was instituted by Mr. Fielder, Deputy-Com-missioner of Stamps.
