August 16. A petition, signed by 500 persons, has been forwarded to Wellington, praying for an extonsion of the Malvern railway to Kowai Pass, a distance of six miles. Steps are being taken to get Ashburton proclaimed a Municipality. A meeting of artisans is to be held tonight, to urge on the Government to have alf work that can be executed here done in the Colony. . *
