WELLINGTON.

August 16. The Agent-General informs the Government by cable of the sailing of the ship Mataura for Napier with 184 immigrants, and of tiie iiangifcikei witli 277 for Canterbury. In the Supreme Court yesterday the following members of the Bar were present :—Messrs. Brandon, senr., Hart, Travers, Allan, Moorhouse, Izard, Quick, Ollivier, Chapman, Edwards, Fitzgerald, and Brandon, juur. Before proceeding with the business, Mr. Brandon read a paper to the effect that having learnt of the action taken by Mr. Barton against the Supreme Court Judges, lie wished, on behalf of the Bar, to prevent the public from being misled, and to state that it was done without any previous consultawitli the Bar ; that they were ignorant of its statements, and had no sympathy with a course so unprecedented in its character. The Chief Justice thanked those assembled at the Bar for their expressed sympathy and confidence, but desired to say nothing to deprecate inquiry into his (the Chief Justice's) conduct. It was the priviV-ge of every British subject, if lie had veil-grounded complaint against a judge, to as'; lor his removal at the hands of the Legislature. Mr. Richmond concurred. He gloried in the liability of having their conduct investigated at any time ; that was a guarantee to the public of the administration of the Court at the proper time and place. He should be glad to meet any accusation against him.
