SUICIDES. August 14. A Committee is preparing a memorial in support of the demand made by the Southern artisans that the Government should support local industries. Mr. Cross, husband of Mrs. Cross who died from mysterious poisoning three months ago, is missing. His hat and stick were found close to the bank of the Tamaki river. It is supposed that he has committed suicide through remorse at his bad treatment of his wife. Alfred Durham has been missing since Tuesday. His wife received a letter, saying that by the time she received it he would ha T e blown his brains out. Durham was in difficulties, and drinking hard. A police investigation will be made.

The Rotorua has arrived with, Australian news to August B.—J. K. Ernmett (Fritz) threw himself into the sea from Glenelg jetty. He was draggedout by-a fisherman. When rescued, lie laughed heartily, and denies having attempted suicide. He said he only wanted to bathe.—A grave charge has been made against Dr. Beaney, senior surgeon of the Melbourne Hospital, to the ellect that he admitted a non-professional witness to see a delicate operation on a female under chloroform.—The Victorian Government intends to invite the neighbouring Colonies to co-operate in enacting legislation against runaway husbands. The Rotorua sails rfouth to-night.
