Yesterday was a red-letter day for the Maerewdienua district, the event of the year —the ploughing contest,—so far as ■ that district is concerned, having taken plac; at Dunti'oon. At. an early hour every throughfare was all bustle, ami long before the time appointed for the I coinmencement of the competition, the i scene of operations—a tract of level laiul lon the property of Messrs Borton ami I Mc.Master— presented a busy appearand!, j Of course, the farmers, big and little, masculine and feminine, for miles around ( were there, either as competitors or onlookers, and before the day was over ~ ! upwards of 300 persons had assembled, -■ Tae excitement was much greater an! | '■. more general than would be imagined lij ~ ■ by those nnaeipi.i'nt.'d with that list of a i i yeoman's skill, a ploughing match, am! | : 'occasion illy might have been heard the | shouts of some heholder, anxious for the J success of a fri n I, " Bravo, Jack ;" or, I •'Go it, B.ll."
