AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
(Per Tararua, at the Bluff.) Melbourne. The Government, having curtailed the direct line to Oakleigh, have effected a saving of L 130,000, from which it is proposed to make two new lines. Great opposition is being shown to the line going through the Botanical Gardens. The Financial Statement was made on the 9th inst. The Land Tax Bill is ready to follow. The weather is unusually fine, with very little rain. Sir W. Jorvoise's report involves an expenditure of L 150,000, and an annual expenditure of L 13,000, which is LIO,OOO less than at present. He depends upon batteries and torpedoes at the Headland entrance as a means of defence. Wheat firm at 7s o^d; oats in more demand. The Government intend to introduce a Bill to permit ministers of religion to sit in Parliament, but while members of the House not to officiate. A magnificent meteor was seen on the 31st July, which was unusually brilliant.
