SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRKSrONDKNTS.J DUNEDIN. A NEW PARTY FORMED. DEFEAT OF THE GOVERNMENT PROBABLE. August 4. A special Parliamentary telegram to tho Times says that Messrs. Gisborne, Grey, Sheehan, Montgomery, Bunny, Travcrs, Macandrew, Stout, and other leading members of tho House have agreed on a common platform, which is to the following effect :—lst, That the waste lands should be developed by tho State, and then sold, and not sold in blocks to bo aflerwanls developed by means of State funds ; 2nd, That the Customs taxation on necessaries of ordinary consumption should be relieved ; 3rd, That property should not be improved by expenditure out of borrowed money, but by local taxation ; 4th, That hospitals should be supported by contributions from the State, aided by local endowments ; tjtli, That Separation be abandoned. They have communicated these t.) Sir William Fitz'.ierbort, and asked him to lead a party formed on this basis. He lias not yet replied, but will certainly accept if tne support is sufliciont to ensure success. There is no likelihood of Mr. Stafford taking the Agent-General-ship.
Mr. W. D. Mears, Secretary of the Victoria Insurance Company, lias boon appointed General Manager of the now Union Insurance Company.
