The polling in connection with the election of a Municipal Councillor for Severn Ward took place to-day, and pulsed off exceedingly quietly, thore not being the slightest appearance of anything unusual taking place. At a few minutes past four o'clock the Returning Oliicer announced the state of the poll to be as follows : —Liddle, 50 ; Johnston, 33. He therefore declared Mr. liddle duly elected. A large number of gentlemen have, we understand, expressed their willingness to em oil themselves as members, and a preliminary meeting will be held in tire course of a few days, to take the preliminary steps towards the formation of the Club. The subject was mooted at a meeting held to-day for the formation of an acclimatisation society, by Mr. Brydone, who stated that by next season there would be quite sufficient hares to afford some excellent sport. Mr. O'Meagher expressed his approval of the formation of such a club, and said it would induce members to take an interest in the protection of game, especially out of season. Mr. Wheatley said he would be ulad to see such a club formed, but he thought its members should contribute something towards the funds of the Acclimatisation Society.

Mr. A. IT. Maude will hold a sale of freehold and leasehold properties and household furniture at his stores to-morrow, at noon. A meeting of gentlemen favourable to the formation of an acclimatisation society was held to-day at the County Council Chambers. There were present—Messrs. Reid (in the chair), O'Meagher, Menlove, Coggins, Wheatlcy, Duncan, M'Lennan, Connell, Borton, Fleming, Brydoue, E. C. Smir.h, Stewart, Fenwiek, Sutton, M'Lean, Kind, Mcdlicoit, Cra-'g, Hall, Dr. Be I autour, ai.d Dr. Garland. Mr. Wheatlcy, who had called the meeting, explained the object in view, and said he had taken action in the matter in consequence of a letter having been received by the County Council from the Under-Secretary, intimating that unless a society were formed in this district all moneys received for licenses would go to the Dunediu society. After some discussion, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Mr. Duncan, seconded by Mr. Menlove, "That a provisional committee be appointed to take the necessary stops for formation of the society." The Chairman was requested to write to the Dunedin and Christ church societies for copies of their | rules. This terminated the business before the general meeting, and a meeting ot the Provisional Committee was then held. It was deculed, on the motion of Mr. Wheatley, seconded by Mr. M'Lean, that the name of the society should be the " Waitaki County Acclimatisation Society," an amendment to call it the " North Otago Acclimatisation Soci'ty," moved by Mr. Conned and seconded by Mr. M'Lennan, being negatived. Mr. Reid was appointed Chairman of the Provisional Committee, and Mr. Connell Hon. Secretary pro tern. It was decided to have some postal cards printed for the purpose of calling meetings, &c, and it was arranged that Mr. Connell should call another meeting of the Committee as soon as copies of the Dunedin and Christchurch societies' rules had been obtained. A vote of thanks having been accorded to Mr. Wheatley for the interest he had taken in the matter, and a similar compliment paid to the Chairman, the meeting terminated.
