FOOTBALL.

The match which took place on Saturday was the best one we have witnessed in Oamaru since the tussle with Duneelin last year, and we hope it is only the precursor of many equally enjoyable ones this season. The sides were Colonials v. The Worlel, anel although the Colonials had a slight advantage in numbers (at one time three more than The World), The Worlel had a far greater one in the quality of their phiyers—nearly all the first-team men of the Club [(laying with them, and the juniors and light-weights playing e>n the Colonial siele. The aelvautage of having the players on their siele was very apparent, as it was seen from the beginning that although the Colonials were over matcheel, both as regarded weight and age, had it not been for their indomitable energy and plucky resistance they would have sufl'ered a Severe defeat. During the game The World players lost one of their men for a few minutes, but he commenced again, anel two of the Colonials had to take lengtheneel spells, the result of a little tumbling. The first goal was kicked by Walls for the Colonials, from a touch-down by Caverhill, anel a teuichdown made by Corliss previously, about which there was a dispute, was conceded by the Colonials in favour of the Worlel. After some even play, Honour secured a touch-down very near the goalposts of the Colonials ; and a very easy kick by Booth gave a goal to the Worlel. Shortly before knocking off, Thompson ran in a touch-down very cleverly for the World, and upon a try being made for a goal, some objection was raiseel by the Colonial Captain to the direction taken in carrying out the ball. This objection not being taken notice of by the Worlel players, the Colonial captain orelered his men to remain quiet, and an easy goal was kicked by Holelsworth, without any resistance or opposition being made or shown by the Colonials. We trust that in the case of future matches, umpires will be selected who will prevent any disputes, which only mar the pleasures of the game. We have heard that it is likely the return match will be played on Saturday next.
