A pew remarks made at the nomination for Municipal Cpimcillors yesterday, called to our remembrance the circumstance that the Mayor of our town receives a wretchedly mean salary. It is creditable to Messrs. Fasiilto>" and Liddle that they recognise the fact that Ll5O per annum is an inadequate return for the performance of the functions attaching to the office of Mayor of Oamarn. The salary would be a mere pittance to award any person who could lay claim to filling the Mayoral chair physically, and into whom it would be necessary to pump brains : but to vote an intelligent, conscientious, energetic man a Ll5O a-year, or any tiling less than LlO9 in excess of that sum, is nothing less than a perfect joke to anyone but the individual who has to accept it and look pleasant. Of course, the honour is great, but the drudgery and responsibility incurred are infinitely greater. " The labourer is worthy of his hire," whether his work be physical or mental, or both, and we hope that the Council will lose no time in doing justice to one who has laboured judiciously late and early for the good of Oamaru.
