PARLIAMENT.

(BY TELEGEAPH, FROM THE PRESS AGENCY.)

Wellington, July 2G. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. There was a very light Order Paper. The Government, replying to a question, declined to place a sum of money on the Estimates for distribution among the Agricultural Societies, in order to promote interest in agricultural and pastoral industries. The system had been tried in Otago, and found to have a pernicious effect.

The Government promised to erect a beacon on the Hapuka reef, Blind Bay, as soon as possible. A return was ordered to be prepared furnishing details of the tenders for the construction of all rolling stock in the Colony. Returns were also ordered of all payments to be made to those who held office as Superintendents of Provinces and members of Provincial Executives, and the nature of the services for which such payments were made.

Mr. Stevens is to ask when the engagement of Sir Julius Vogel terminates. Mr. Woolcock gave notice of motion regarding the incidence of taxation. The House adjourned very early.

In the Legislative Council, the Friendly Societies Bill was read a second time.

NOTES IN PARLIAMENT.

[from our special correspondent.]

Wellington, July 26

In reply to Mr. Shrimski's question with reference to the Maoris causing the settlers annoyance at the Upper Waitaki, the Premier stated that the Government had not heard anything about the matter, and said the police force in the Middle Island was sufficient for the protection of the people.
