(l!Y TELI'.or.AI'H, KKOM TIIK PKES.S AC.KN'IJY.) O Wellington, July 24. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. A number of petitions were presented, and notices of motion given. Amongst the petitions was one from dames Carroll, formerly Sergeant of Police at Oamaru, praying thai he might lie reinstated, or compensated for past services. The lion. W. Fox gave notice of his intention to ask for leave to introduce a Dill to amend the Licensing Laws. The Speaker announced that, the Ser-geaut-at-Arms (Dr. (Greenwood) had resigned, and that .Major Paul had been appointed in his place. Mr. Travel's, the newly-elected member for Wellington city, was sworn in. It was notilied that the Registration of Electors Act would lie amended, so as to throw the onus of proof on the objector. The Hon. Mr. lieid, in reply to a question, said the appointment of a Minister of Mines for the West Coast of the Middle Island depended on the County Councils. A General Harbour lioard Hill is to be introduced. The House will to-morrow consider the granting of supply. The most important business of to-day'rt sitting was the introduction of the Education Bill by the Hon. Mr. Bowen, who made a long and eloquent speech, explaining the principles of the Pill, and the reasons actuating the Government in drawing up its provisions. The lion. gentleman was loudly applauded at the conclusion of Iris .speech. The Pill was read a lirs! time, and the second reading fixed for Tuesday next, though considerable, opposition thereto was manifested on the ground (ha! if was too soon to introduce so important :i measure.
