DUNEDIN.
THE UNEMPLOYED. July 10. The Hon. George M'Lean telegraphed that the Government will set aside a portion of the Clinton-Balclutha section of the southern railway for construction by the unemployed. One of the morning papers states that Commissioner Shearman is appointed to report upon the present state of every gaol in the Colony, as regards accommodation and system of discipline. Mr. Hislop proceeded to Wellington to-day, re education matters. The sub-estimated expenditure of the Education Board for the ensuing financial year is L 67,384, including L 26,570 for school buildings.
A large meeting was held at Arrowtown on Saturday evening, at which the following resolution was carried : —" That the Government be petitioned to continue the railway from, Kingston to Dunedin, thereto join with Dunedin by any approved line." A railway meeting is to be held to-night, at Queenstown. Cromwell, Arrowtown, and Queenstown are unanimous on the subject of extending the line from Kingston. July 11.
At the meeting of the Waste Lands Board, to-day, it was decided not to release run 88 (Mr. Menzies'), nor the remaining portion of run 94 (Barton and M'Master's).
